Pope's latest 'forgetfull' moment a lie

Pope Benedict said Thursday in Scotland that he was "shocked and ... saddened" by the growing crisis of pedophile priests in Europe.

Interesting, since it was Benedict who, in the 1960s, helped draft the church's strategy on how to respond to complaints of priestly abuse.

Hard to believe much has changed in the Catholic Church since the Boston Massacre of 2002 and the notorious case of Acadiana's own Father Gilbert Gauthe.

I'll admit that the church, and this deep-rooted problem, is comprised of individual priests and individual bishops, and individual laity. And that the problem does not indict the whole of the church -- priests, laity or other.

But it is wholly disconcerting to hear the pope feign shock and dismay over a problem that was his to fix, yet he sought only to insulate the church from lawsuits and embarrassment.

Benedict does not get it, and as long as that's the case I will ask them to pass the collection plate -- past me, to the person to my right.
